What is it about the season of Christmas that causes so much controversy? There doesn’t seem to be the same kind of issues over any other holiday. We can get through Independence Day without problems as long as we don’t accidentally blow each other up with fireworks. We romance our way through Valentine’s Day and enjoy stuffing ourselves during Thanksgiving, although some want to skip the thanks part and go straight through to ‘turkey’ day.
So what’s the issue about Christmas? Christmas may not be the definite day of the birth of Christ, but it is and has been for years the day Christians chose to celebrate the birth of their Savior. It is the day Christians celebrate the gift God gave to redeem mankind from a sinful state and to have the opportunity to choose eternal life through faith in Jesus. This special holiday is of the utmost importance to those of the Christian faith.
I know there are debates about the way it all came about with the tree, decorations, candles, and all the things we use to celebrate this special holiday. But I don’t think there is an argument about the cause of the celebration in spite of those who try to disparage the true meaning.
Christmas is a Christian holiday (Holy Day) and has always been a Christian holiday. So how is it okay for someone to attempt to change it to something else? It seems that some people who are not Christian want to shanghai this Christian holiday and make it what they want it to be. If someone wants to have a holiday without Christ, then they need to get their own and leave the Christians' holiday alone. I don’t care if you want to say “Happy Holidays”, but don’t try to change a Christian holiday into something it isn’t.
